New zip line park opens in Perry County

LEOPOLD, IN. (WFIE)- A new zip-line park just opened up in Leopold, which is just north of Tell City.

After opening just a week ago, the park is already gaining a lot of attention.

ISP:  Four hurt in high speed Santa Claus wreck

 

Four people were hurt in what Indiana State Police say was a high speed crash in Spencer County just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers say 19-year-old James Warren of Santa Claus topped a hill just before a curve and then lost control of his 2008 Ford Focus on Melchoir Drive.  The vehicle then slid off the road and struck a tree.

Holiday World launches ‘HoliAuction’ to raise funds for Oklahoma tornado victims

SANTA CLAUS, IN (WFIE)- An eclectic collection of park memorabilia is up for auction, as Holiday World raises funds for the Red Cross's relief efforts for victims of Monday's tornado in Oklahoma.

"We've put together an awesome package to appeal to fans of our park," says Holiday World president Matt Eckert. "The auction winner will receive eight Holiday World tickets, meals, use of a cabana, first ride of the day on our Mammoth water coaster, plus a set of park flags, one-of-a-kind coaster art, and more."

Big drop in Spencer County unemployment claims

Spencer County still enjoys one of the lowest unemployment rates in Indiana according to figures released by the Department of Workforce Development Friday.  The county's 6.7% rate is among the 20 lowest in the state and showed a large drop in unemployment from the previous month. It had been 8.2% in March.

The number of jobless workers in Perry County also dropped, going from from 8.3% in March to 7.4% in April.

Dubois County's 5.2% rate is the lowest in the state, just ahead of Hamilton (5.3%) and Daviess (5.5%).  

Overall, Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percent to 8.5 percent in April, the largest one month decrease in over a year. Private sector employment in the Hoosier state also increased by 6,800 jobs over the past month and exceeded the national rate of growth. Indiana has now experienced private sector employment growth in 37 of the past 40 months. 

Former Cannelton school superintendent booked into jail

CANNELTON, IN (WFIE)- Indiana State Police say Al Chapman has been booked into the Perry County Jail.

The former Cannelton School Superintendent is accused of embezzling more than $200,000 from the school. U.S. Marshals arrested Chapman in Louisiana last week and brought him back on Thursday.

A state audit also revealed that Chapman had allegedly quit paying the school's federal taxes and more than $300,000 was misspent from a trust.

Push for stoplight at Spencer Co. intersection one step closer

SPENCER CO., IN (WFIE)-

The push for a stoplight where a Spencer County high school student died is one step closer to happening. 

You'll soon find papers posted around Rockport to announce a public hearing with INDOT that's set for June 4.

It's a meeting that's been months in the making.

"My child was taken from me and I know INDOT says there's not enough traffic and stuff you know, but we've had one child die and that's one too many," mother Jamie Hogston said.
