Plans for State Road 66 and Orchard Road intersection announced | News
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced today the action plan for the intersection of State Road 66 and Orchard Road in Reo. The move stems from a special hearing where local leaders and concerned citizens asked INDOT to review and improve the intersection.
The short-term solution will include the installation of a temporary traffic signal which will allow left turning movements from eastbound S.R. 66 onto North Orchard Road. Signal heads will be installed on the existing poles at the intersection.
No new pavement will be placed; however, additional pavement markings will be installed to help identify the lanes. This will include designation for right turn only movements from S.R. 66 onto Orchard Road. Sensors will be placed in the pavement to allow traffic to flow through the intersection. Work could begin as early as tomorrow, Aug. 20, and is anticipated to be completed by Friday, Aug. 30, weather permitting.
The long-term solution includes the installation of a roundabout at the intersection. Roundabouts have proven to be safe and effective in moving traffic through sometimes heavy volume intersections. Design of the new intersection will begin soon with construction to begin in a future year.
