Spencer County’s police dog will retire at the end of the month after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Ares, who has served with the Rockport Police and Spencer County Sheriff’s Department, has been in service since 2004 according to our media partner, the Spencer County Journal.
Sheriff’s Deputy David Hall and Ares, have been partners for all of that time. When he’s not working, Ares has been a loyal pet.
Hall says since Ares has been a member of law enforcement, he’s accounted for more than $200,000 in street value seizure of drugs.
Hall will continue with the department but if a new dog can be purchased and trained, handling duties will be turned over to Deputy Justin Hester. Hall is pursuing funding that would help with the expenses.
Hall says he’ll have all kinds of memories once Ares is no longer around, but preparing for the end is difficult.
“People don’t realize the bond you get … this is an animal that would give his life for you ... he hears your problems and he feels your grief. ”
