Lake Rudolph adds 5 water slides, new cabins

For their 2013 season, Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort in Santa Claus is investing approximately $4 million in additions and improvements.

Lake Rudolph is adding five new water slides in a complex called Santa's Splash Down WaterPark. Two are fiberglass slides that were previously owned by Holiday World & Splashin' Safari. In addition, an inflatable water slide called the Trippo® will feature three slides. The water slides will open during the 2013 summer season.

The first fiberglass slide will be open and partially enclosed with a length of 344 feet. The second slide will be enclosed and 296 feet long. Both fiberglass slides will use inner tubes. At three stories tall, the Trippo is the world's largest inflatable water slide. It will be a wet slide in summer and may be used as a dry slide during non-summer months. The longest and center slide is 136 feet in length and the side slides are 113 feet long.

Tell City volunteer honored by US Forest Service

Tell City volunteer honored by US Forest Service

The 15-state Eastern Region of the US Forest Service awarded two honors to Indiana volunteers for 2012. “With such a large region and so many nominations, it is a real tribute to our volunteers that two awards were received on the Hoosier,” said Melany Glossa, Forest Supervisor.

The Regional Volunteer Awards recognize outstanding volunteers in eight categories. Bill Flamion from Tell City received the award for Campground Host. Flamion began mowing the Saddle Lake Campground because he liked to camp there, and knew that the Forest did not have enough personnel to keep up with all the maintenance.

Glossa explained, “That’s how volunteers often come to us, they see a need and they offer to lend a hand.  Bill filled out a volunteer form and has helped maintain the campground and boat ramp for the past two years.”

Vandalism put end to camping at Hemlock Cliffs trailhead, parking area

Vandalism put end to camping at Hemlock Cliffs trailhead, parking area

Camping is no longer allowed at the trailhead and parking area at Hemlock Cliffs inside Hoosier National Forest. It has long been a popular camping area but this has been the only trailhead in the forest that allowed camping.

“Unfortunately, due to vandalism we have to prohibit camping in this parking area,” said Nancy Myers, recreation planner for the Tell City District.

“Vandalism has become a real problem.  People remove and burn the split rail fence for their campfires,” explains Myers. She added that litter is also an increasing problem.  Myers noted that the Forest Plan prohibits camping at trailheads, so to be consistent camping is no longer allowed at the Hemlock Cliffs Trailhead and Parking Area.
