You can help clean up Ohio River shoreline

Volunteers are needed for River Sweep 2012 scheduled for Saturday, June 16, along the shoreline of the Ohio River and its many tributaries.

River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond.  More than 3,000 miles of shoreline will be combed for trash and debris.  This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states.

“The Ohio River Sweep is very important because for a few hours on one day volunteers can help make a difference in the appearance of this great natural resource,” said Jeanne Ison, Project Director.  “The Sweep has grown so much in the past few years, we’ve been able to expand the project to tributaries and feeder streams of the Ohio River.”

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial celebrates 50th anniversary

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Indiana's first national park, will celebrate its 50th anniversary throughout 2012.

"Fifty years ago, the site for Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial was set aside to preserve and protect the legacy of Abraham Lincoln in Indiana, capping a long tradition of commemoration and remembrance within the local community," says Historian and Special Events Coordinator Emily Thompson. "This year, we celebrate the history and creation of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, and mark its importance in local and national history."

To commemorate 50 years, the National Park Service will host several celebratory events including a week-long festival and a conference focusing on 26 memorial sites within the national park system.

1856 Santa Claus post office moves to join other buildings

Last week, a crew moved a 132-year-old church to Santa Claus Park, next to the newly-restored 1935 Santa statue and the Santa Claus Museum.  Today, a second historic building was moved.  The town's original Santa Claus Post Office, built in 1856, traveled east on Indiana State Road 162 and south on 245 to its new home.

The 45-ton building measures 18' wide and 40' long.
